Spain & Cooper Construction was founded in 1971 by co-owners Tom and Susan Spain, who are now joined by their daughter, Betsy, and son-in-law, Mike Cooper. Together we will continue a tradition of excellence in building distinctive custom homes in Gainesville — caring for each home as if it were our own.

Our focus is custom homes with an emphasis on service, quality and attention to detail. We assist with every aspect of the building process, starting with design work and following the customer through the building process and for a full year after completion (followed by nine additional years of warranty protection provided by the 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty). We also build a few speculation homes each year and do some custom light commercial construction.

Tom and Susan are both certified contractors, having passed the examination given by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board.

We have roots in the community going back five generations and are committed to improving the quality of life in Gainesville through our work with civic and charitable organizations, by serving on various city and county government boards and committees, and by working for affordable housing.

We are active in:

• The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce
• The Builders Association of North Central Florida, where Tom has twice served as president
• Attending continuing education seminars regularly to stay abreast of the latest developments in areas like radon control, energy code compliance, building design and decorating
• Providing long-term funding for the PBS program "This Old House," seen locally on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. on WUFT-TV
• Serving on numerous boards and supporting many local charities and organizations (see "who we are" section for details)

Our extended family is our network of suppliers and subcontractors.

We use the same suppliers and subcontractors year after year, having chosen them not because they are the lowest bidders, but for their business stability, quality workmanship and the service they provide to the homeowner after closing. Many of our subcontractors and suppliers have been working with us since we started in 1971.
